Oklahoma City Thunder Begin Championship Defense with Thrilling Overtime Win
The Thunder star came to Oklahoma City in 2019.
Shai Gilgeous-Alexander delivered the game-winning baskets late in a second overtime period as the Oklahoma City Thunder started their championship campaign with a 125-124 victory over the visiting Rockets.
Last season's MVP scored 35 points, featuring two from the free-throw line with just 2.3 seconds left in double OT, securing the titleholders a positive start.
Houston's Alperun Sengun top-scored with 39 points and also hit a career-high five shots from beyond the arc.
But the Thunder's rookie, who added 28 points of his own, was instrumental together with match-winner Gilgeous-Alexander.
"Determination and defence," SGA said of their showing. "We know that when we do it defensively we give ourselves a opportunity no matter what's going on—shots, misses, good luck or bad luck. We did sufficient defence to secure the victory. We're still shaking off rust, but it's a good start."
Prior to the tip-off, Oklahoma's title banner was unveiled at their home court, while the players were awarded their title rings.
Oklahoma City defeated the Pacers in the previous season's best-of-seven NBA Finals. It was their first title since the team moved in 2008 to Oklahoma City from Seattle, who had won the 1979 title.
The Pacers will have the chance to get some early revenge on this Friday when they host the Thunder, while the Houston are back on court on the identical day at the Pistons.
In other action, a huge performance of 43 points, 12 rebounds and nine assists from Luka Doncic was not enough to prevent his new team the Lakers from falling to a 119-109 loss against the Warriors.
Miami's star scored 31 points and Stephen Curry chipped in 23 for the road team.
Los Angeles were missing the NBA's all-time leading scorer James as he recovers from a back issue.
